I think that chapter heading is subtle, because it is ironic. In fact, nothing does happen in that chapter except the casual discovery that Jim has run low on petrol. So what? Well - so everything, but the first-time reader cannot suspect how important Jim's departure with the petrol tin is. Titty's question halfway down p 89 is another little pointer, but again the first-time reader will not quite pick up the full significance, although he/she will register Jim's answer. How subtle can you get?
