Oh Pam, that *was* a red rag to the Ed, wasn't it? And the resulting analysis was extemely interesting.

SW being *so* high on the 'Jolly' count is fascinating. Without re-reading the whole book (not just now) I wonder how they split between the meanings of 'This is very jolly' and 'That's jolly good'. The first useage would be extra-polite and innocuous. I wonder if the jolly-count is raised by their having tea and conversations with the Missionaries- who, as you remember, weren't fooled.
