The idea that the mousing would prevent a hook from bending under load is new to me, but it makes sense. I had only ever thought mousing would prevent unwanted unshipping. I certainly agree that sisterhooks merely reduce the likelihood of this eventuality, not eliminate it.

However, while I haven’t actually seen sisterhooks moused, a glance at the photo that Mike F. recently posted makes me wonder whether mousing them would in fact prevent the hooks from bending open. I’m inclined to think that it wouldn’t since you’d probably lash their shanks together. Indeed, the shape of the hook would make it impossible to mouse over the opening because the hooks’ ends are not turned back outward, which is necessary to prevent the mousing from slipping off.

So, for the moment, I will stick to my hypothesis that one lashes sisterhooks rather than mousing them. Your excellent listing from the OED, John, convinces me further since the definitions of the two words do not appear to overlap (unless I missed something).

I’m always open to compelling arguments to the contrary.
