I'm rereading PP at the moment (studying for exams - one hour of study, one chapter for a break) and just found a sort of example of a narrator's observation, although it doesn't use 'I'. Just at the end of chapter 10:
"They had eaten their sandwiches adn drunk the hot tea out of the thermos flasks, hot tea which, in spite of its hotness, is the most refreshing of drinks on hot days."
Perhaps it's the change in tense that makes it seem like a personal opinion from the narrator - it didn't jolt, though. I don't think I would have noticed if I hadn't read this thread recently.
