My wife has just been reading a book written in 1936 by an American female author on growing up in the 1890's on a small poor farm in America, this book was a best seller and made it into the Atlantic Weekly. In her very well written book she decries the youth of today for all their toys and selfishnesh at Christmas compared to the halycon days of her youth. I hardly think anyone now would think that the average farm child in America in 1936 was spoilt or probably that selfish.

Ramsome gave his characters foibles like all of us, and he made them real. That is what I love about them and his writing. They are real.

The young adults of today have a very harsh world to grow up in, and we expect them to learn so much and to behave just so. Let them be young and enjoy themselves, they are no worse or better than the earlier generations - it is not a child's fault if a parent is self indulgent.

All people will stretch a truth or rationalize and action to save someone pain such as Nancy hiding the D's so that her mother would not get into trouble with the GA, I mean she succeeded and the GA left a good note. We all know the truth and we can laugh at the GA as I am sure that Nancy's mother laughed at the stories when she got back. The GA deserved what she got as she had no tolerance and IMHO that is the worst of crimes against another person - as we discuss occaionally in our rarish talks about the "I" word. Ransome demonstrates a way to deal with intolerance in PM - but is humouring the GA the best method or should she have been stood up to before this by CF and MB?

I wonder.
