In PM, Scarab's bottom is described as "shiny with smooth black varnish". Does anyone know what varnish had been used? The varnish I'm currently laying on my boat is very much gold, perhaps a little bit reddish, not at all black. I know sometimes sandbaggers had varnished bottoms that, while the varnish was still tacky, had been rubbed with graphite for that ultra-smooth racing finish. Anyone know what they used as bottom paint back then?

Sorry if this topic has already been addressed ad nauseam.

Alex
