Two other authors whose writings you may enjoy for their descriptive powers, Ed, are Maurice Griffiths and Carleton Mitchell. Both are yachtsmen and consequently write about sailing, but both do it exceptionally well.
Griffiths was the editor of "Yachting Monthly " magazine for 40 years, and never sailed out of his beloved Thames estuary. Mitchell was an outstanding American sailor who roamed the world. When recently asked to nominate three favourite authors who were not AR, these two topped my list.
