Actually my recollection is that he was shot by the Irish for not supporting the accomodation between the UK and Free State in the early 1920's and continuing the IRA fight. Childers actually fought in the British Army in WWI after smuggling arms to Ireland. There are a couple of good biographies of Childers which go into all this.
