I think that has been pretty much always the case! Look at the pre-teen boys that could fix old radios or cars and just about any thing else - but simply were not interested in "academics". Example: Dick and his love of science - at age nine or ten (or whatever his age was). He seemed to know a lot about what made things work! It is such a joy to see young kids who are discovering wonderful "stuff"! And cornputers are now at the forefront of Wonderful Stuff. And I think even back in the "good old days" there were a lot of young people who didn't give two hoots about much of anything interesting or constructive - example: George Owdon and his friends.
