There's always a personal level, for a writer and for the engaged reader. Looking to the latter, why are so many 'engaged' to the SA corpus? In some ways the answers seem banal, (but poignant nevertheless)The world we might have had as children, the perfect summer world. Where John might feel tears of pride in his father's approval (but love?), and not know the need to cry from hurt or jealousy or unrequited teenage love. Where the adults were in background, stable, sensible, cool, and never intruded emotionally. Its the life we (and AR) might wish we'd had. Sans Freud, sans Marx and Engels, sans Herr Hitler, sans the realities of my bloody Public School anyway, and of my hyper-neurotic family. A play world really. But hey, it was great on the boat yesterday.
