We did not stay in Windermere at all, so I am not sure about accomodation there.

There is a nice Travelodge near Kendall and if you are staying anywhere else try the travelodges they are cheapish (50 pounds and clean.) Avoid Wales they are not nice in the Travelodge we stayed at near Chester.

I rented through Thrifty or Dollar sense or some such name. Avoid them their insurance is steep.

Yes my new VISA card came through with the covered insuracne on travelling (last week - I swore a bit.) and I am sure I can get the same thing at a small cost from AMEX, make sure before you go, so that you are covered.

My excess in OZ was 3500 on a recent trip and it cost me 350 to get rid of it, someone scratched the car in a carpark and I was glad I did pay.

Remember if you go into downtown London to get the daily ticket for the congestion zone or you will get a nasty 40 pound fine in the mail when you get back. No one will tell you about this little lovely

The Holiday Inn in Bloomesbury is nice and cheapish and close to everything, we walked all over from there. The parking is 10 pounds a night.

Bloomsbury is on the main railway line, if I was doing it again I would take the train into London have my days in London without the car but use the tube, train it back out to Heathrow and get a car.

Of the two airports Gatwick is lot easier to get around and it has a nice pub just up the road.

Do not take to many clothes, we always do, try for a week before you go pack the stuff separatley and they live in it, if you do not use it in the week do not take it. Jeans are heavy etc.
