In adition to Adams and Asimov, there's also a story, possibly by Henry Kuttner, in which all the computers in the universe are linked into a huge network. A guy switches it on and asks "Is there a God?". A flash of lightning welds the switch in the "on" position, and a voice replies "Now there is a God."
My wife, currently reading over my shoulder, thinks that's from Fredric Brown, in his anthology "Starshine".
