While some of the Ransome books have drawings of the compass rose showing the initials of the assorted headings, these may be a bit small to where some of the notations are not all that easily read.

There is a very clear drawing of this circular device found in "SAILING" by E. F. Knight in Fig 45. See Chapter 12, "Instruments of Navigation" for this very clear representation.

And while you are looking at that, there are a lot of detailed drawings in that book showing quite an assortment of knots. If one has any dealings with ropes, a good study of these drawings would be quite informative.

Although that book may be considered a bit "old" some of its excellent descriptions are ageless and quite valuable.

John and Dick certainly felt it time well spent in studing this book to enhance their understanding of the science of sailing. For the bit of sailor within us, it would do us all well to likewise check it out.
