Finally a question: does anyone on this board think we should do all we can to protect young lives? I would appreciate a round of answers - be aware this is a loaded question.

I suppose it depends on what you mean by "all"?

All that is humanly possible? Perhaps wrapping our children in cotton wool and not allowing them to do anything that could possibly end their lives, such as be driven in a car or go out in the rain. In which case you might ask if they ever really had a life?

Or all that is reasonable, where reasonable could be drawn anywhere across a very wide spectrum of individual decisions and choices on a vast range of matters.
I let my children go out in a dinghy wearing a lifejacket, someone else may think that riding a horse on is reasonably safe. I may insist on getting my children inoculated against childhood illnesses, someone else may decide that they would rather risk them getting the disease.
