Great Northern Divers are known as Common Loons around these parts (southern Ontario) and while they are not as common as they were, they are not rare either. They are found across most of Canada and are so Canadian that we have them on the back of our dollar coins which are therefore known as loonies.
At one of our Ontario Corroborees a few years ago, on Clear Lake near Peterborough we even had one in attendance, it swam to and fro, fishing just a few yeards from the shore.
I have been as close as about fifteen feet to a couple when I was swimming and seen them eating small fish that they caught. They had a couple of young ones with them. Loon cries are frequently heard on quiet evenings on Ontario lakes.
