Just got back from 3 weeks in the UK, starting with the NE Tars day at the Roman fort-Wallsend (Sigednum)which was delightful-met my namesake Pete Truelove
Then (because of late booking) 6 assorted nights in the Lakes--
(a) Travelodge on the M6 just below Kendal (perfectly OK and only GBP 25 for a double if you book ahead 1 week)
(b) ForestSide Country Hotel just opposite Grasmere; quiet, wonderful, esp. incl. breakfast. However for the older TARS, beware of some rooms up 4 flights of stairs, & a short hike to parking lot. Unable to get in at the Thistle Hotel just at Grasmere entrance, wh seesm v popular (but may be noisy).
(c) Windermere Marina just below the Ferry (Bowness)-poorly signposted, 4 midweek nights- a very reasonable deal. 2 storey, 2 bath (both on the bedroom floor!) & great kitchen. Try to get a Unit close to the clubhouse (heated swimming pool, laundromat..) and ask for a laundry key on registering. Towel rails operate from unmarked switches close to floor, and they bite. Bring higher wattage regular UK bulbs if you read. Perfect if you have 2-4 kids.
Keswick Theatre by the Lake - better than ever. "Strangers on the train"- good. After-theatre snack-a short hop to Windermere (eg. Joe Vinegar's or whatever the name is)

At this time of year (late Sept.), Beatrice Potter House, Hawkshead walking around, Greater Langdale (both roads), Cartmel - no problems!
LOg House Restaurant - Ambleside (on way out S. to Windermere).
The Supermarket at the Windermere RR station is a required daily stop if you are self-catering. Park right outside just before you get to the shop (which is totally unmarked from this angle), squeeze yourself in where the buses park. No one will bother you. Vast selection of pies, cheeses, veg.; fruits (even redcurrants) but they
run out early.
