The shores of the Orwell are beautifully wooded, but wide, muddy shoals run out a long way; both sides are flat and muddy at low water. Pin Mill Hard is in fact the only spot on the entire estuary where one can approach low water mark without sinking deep in mud, and that is only thanks to the efforts of that estimable body, the Pin Mill Hard Improvement Committee. The shingle of which the hard is composed is coated with grey mud, which washes over it with each tide.

On the positive side, the hard is little changed since Ransome's day.
