Yes, of course AR was inspired to create his stories and characters, ie he dreamt up the ideas, but the ability to make his characters 'real' (which is what Ed was referring to) relies on writer's craft. It is difficult to 'learn' this in a theoretical sense (eg by going to evening classes), otherwise as Geoff says, we'd all be doing it. AR refined his skills by years and years of writing and journalism - this is the only way to do it, unless you are J K Rowling (but I don't think much of her stuff anyway, and now I am being controversial).
