Peter, you have started something else here. I know what you mean by treating books as sacred objects, and that they need to be read. But they are 'sacred' - there must be another term for this is there are too many religious overtones. Though books are a massed produced item they still have to be treated in a correct way, even a paperback book to me is not a 'throw away' object and some magazines are not either. Just to return to the 'colouring in' debate for a moment - it was something that I was just brought up not to do, and like many childhood things it sticks. I have annotated books for study purposes, but never felt comfortable about doing so!
