To confirm Ross's Canadian comments, there is a converted tug now used as a cruise boat during the summer in the waters round the south east corner of Georgian Bay. During the winter she is left tied up alongside the Town Dock in Penetanguishene Bay. The ice gets to be between 8" and 30 cms thick most winters on the open bay and freezes right up round the hull. People snowmobile, walk and ski across the Bay all winter. They also skate, though they have to sweep the snow off the ice first. Skating on snowy ice is more difficult than walking on it, the wind must have swept all the snow away before they could skate any distance on the lake or tarn.
