Thanks to everybody who answered the question far better than I could have done.
I should, however, make it clear that unpretentious sailing does NOT require abstention from beer. Also reefer jackets are entirely acceptable on shore occasions - I wear one myself. They are pretentious while actually sailing.

Personally I never wear (fly) an ensign on my sailing boat except when actually in a foreign port. This seems to have been AR's practice.
Seriously, though, what does rather shock me is the number of TARBOARD contributors who say that they don't sail. For what other purpose were we put onto this planet??
