Yes, we went this summer. The idea of a TARS expedition sounds good! We travelled by DFDS ferry to Kristiansand from Newcastle, taking our canadian canoe, and drove up the coast to see the Risor traditional wooden boat festival before going on Oslo. The museums are on a peninsular called Bygoy that you can get to by passenger ferry from the City Hall. (As well as the various boat museums there is also one with vernacular buildings transposed from various areas of Norway). If anyone would like more information on going to Norway, I'd be happy to help.
