Isn't the real point how AR himself spelled it? Not whether it is right or wrong in today's context on either side of the Atlantic. His phraseology and spelling are often a bit old fashioned - so what?

Where I have always been puzzled is by his use of 'jibe' instead of 'gybe' - here I fancy his spelling is today more the US useage than the English. But it is spelled 'jibe' in Knight on Sailing, which was his Bible as well as being John and Dick's.
