Winkles, also known as Periwinkles, are one of the Gastropod family of molluscs, inhabiting a conical spiral shell, and living in the intertidal zone. They are boiled before eating, and are known on the other side of the English Channel as "Escargot". Considered as something of a delicacy, I believe.
