The British Ornithological Union keeps the official records. Perhaps someone closer to their headquarters (BOU, c/o The Natural History Museum, Tring, Herts HP23 6AP) could call or visit? Is there any AR correspondence with them recorded?
Incidentally, the Great Northern Diver Web Design Co. says "It was introduced to a generation of (posh) British children by Arthur Ransome's novel Great Northern? ".
