Wasn't it Dick who found that everything is fine at sea, it's when you get near land that the troubles start?
I believe that a turn around the rudder with a line can keep things balanced long enough for a bit of shut-eye if the wind is steady. If its rough - you just don't sleep!
Neville Shute tackled this problem a couple of ways in 'Trustee from the Toolroom', especially when his hero was sailing in the South Pacific for ten days or so.
