Thanks Jonathan Labaree, have done that on wayfarers, my boat weighs about 600+kg!
In answer to the proper place of the mast, it's is a mathematical calculation, relating to the centre of lateral resistance and centre of effort. If it's done wrong you get an increased lee or weather helm.
It's all in John Teale, How to Design a Boat, a fantastic read for any sailor, and I'm sure Captain John would of read it many, many times.
Alasdair Boden - who must stop reading so many rediculous sailing books.
