The silence. Because almost everyone has been taking a deep breath and getting on with non TARS aspect of their lives

Socially the Ullapool AGM was a brilliant success. Hearty congratulations to Scottish Region organising committee for all their hard work.

112 members enjoyed a Ceilidh, except for the Secretary. A member has been given the Black Spot and will walk the plank. Jenny Taylor conned him to make the raffle draw, then proceeded to lead the singing of "Happy Birthday". Actually it was great fun. Prior to the Ceilidh there was an intrductory talk on the area by Malcolm Porteus and a local Ranger, Andy Summers.

Sunday saw two trips , one a "wildlife safari" into the hills and the "bone caves", the other was the "Great Aunt "trip to Inverewe Gardens. In addition there was sailing with Cochy. The Dick Callum cup was won by an improptu inter regional alliance, despite a spirited challenge by the Juniors.

Monday, and aboard the "Pterodactyl" for a rather wet and windy voyage to the Summer Isles. Not much summer, but as usual lots of chat, catching up with old friends and meeting new members.

16.00. The AGM. At very short notice Roger Wardale took the chair as Malcolm Temple had been wisked off to Hong Kong on urgent business.

Resolution 1 was withdrawn as Peter Roche had resigned as a Trustee. Resolution 2, acceptance of the "Rules of the Company" or in more TARRY terms Leading Lights, proved contentious. PR claimed that there had been insufficient consultation and that the Rules were flawed and unlawful. There were other views from the floor, both for and against this view. An amendment seeking to refer the document back to the Board was defeated and Leading Lights were approved by 393 to 20. The Secretary told the AGM that all the comments he had received would be seriously considered by the Trustees as Leading Lights were not "Tablets of Stone" and a revised version would be presented to the 1999 AGM.

Resolution 3, the elevation of the retiring Chairman to be an Honorary Vice President was passed by a similar majority, as was Resolution 4, the allocation of an annual grant to the Nancy Blackett Trust, the amount to be at the discretion of the Trustees. This last resolution also introduced some spirited discussion, which implied that should the NBT run into financial difficulties then TARS might be expected to "bail the out". It was pointed out that the current Treasurer was extreamly tight fisted and would not be a party to such an action!!!

Item 6, the election of 4 Trustees by postal ballot. Terry Absolom, Bill Janes, Clare Kendall-Price and Vicki Slowe were elected. The resignation of Peter Roche has left one elected member vacancy and the process of filling that position will be discussed by the Trustees.

At this point the AGM ran out of time and the Chairman adjourned the meeting to a date and location to be decided.

The finding and restoration of Cochy was the subject of a joint presentation, chaired by Robin Anderson and after a spendid buffet dinner at the Ceilidh Place, Ann Farr and Margaret Ratcliffe, together with a quintet of readers, plus some rather reluctant slides, related the history of "The Ransomes in Scotland".

Finally, there were shanties, lead by Jim Andrews on the shores of Loch Broom, with a bonfire which, despite many "one match" efforts refused to burn. A nostalgic end to a very enjoyable IAGM.

But, more to come. A record 42 TARS set sail on the Tuesday morning to Lewis and GN country. They were seen off by a spontaneous gathering of many members who were sadly about to wend their way back to southern climes. What they did on Lewis will appear in Signals.
