I have just discovered Patrick O'Brian's brilliant naval novels (I suppose everyone else knows about them already). They are a kind of Swallows and Amazons for adults. Full of technical descriptions of sailing at the time of Nelson, historically interesting facts, stomach turning details about surgery on ships, codes of honour and dishonour. Does anyone else read them?
