We should not worry too much about railway errors in 'Harry Potter' films. 'Railway howlers' have been a traditional part of the British film industry since it started. Almost every film with railway sequences in it has them. In Brief Encounter, the 'trains' constantly roaring through the station are in fact the same train - a unit specially hired which did a number of run-throughs filmed from different angles. Some of the 'local trains' were filmed at Watford, in the south of England. In film-making, this is legitimate, as it is done to create a convincing background. What is not legitimate is what happened in John Grierson's Night Mail, where the type of locomotive on what was portrayed as the same train changed several times during the journey, ending up again with the one that started. Some years ago, I went to a special screening of rail sequences from these and other films all shown in sequence. The audience, all railway buffs, were rocking with laughter.
