I don't care about the flak but I do care about the argument being presented in such basic terms. As I said in a previous post, there is much wrong with how land was acquired. In addition there is much wrong with what you can and can't do with land anyone owns, just as there is much wrong with the assumption that (and this is not an 'old chestnut' it is an attitude I have encountered many times) that the countryside is land for everybody to use for recreation - it would be great if it was. Remember, this thread started because Ed pointed out that AR always mentioned that camping etc. in the novels had to be done with permission. Compare this with lesser works such as the Famous Five where children seem to roam the countryside with no thought etc. to asking if they should or not.
