As a Londoner born and educated and therefore without region bias (except London IS the best place!!), I think that the quality and readability of AR's books follow his appreciation of his surrounding.

The Lakes were a real home and his best writings were based there.

He liked East Anglia and wrote well incorporating the background.

Scotland he only visited once for background and there is no real sympathy with the area or characters. GN may also have reflected being written in the drab immediate post war era.

China he only visited and was not at home with the area or the characters.

However I do find PD a very readable book reflecting a love of the sea and a knowledge of ships.
