If you can, go in May - not only are there less visitors about, but there are more hours of daylight, being closer to the summer solstice (June 21st). Some years ago I was working in Whitehaven at that time of the year, and was able to spend the evenings taking long walks around the western lakes in good light. The only problem was that many of the pubs stopped serving food at 9 p.m., whereas I wanted to stay out until the light faded, which was later.

As far as the weather is concerned - last February I was on the fells above Upper Miterdale (a candidate for Swallowdale) and had to strip off down to a T-shirt, it was so warm. Whereas there have been "summer" days when the rain is coming at you horizontally and it feels close to freezing. There is no way that you can predict what Cumbria will throw at you at any time of the year, so you just have to take pot-luck !
