I think I've seen someone talking about hinged splatchers somewhere else; my understanding was that the hinges would enable you to break just part of the splatcher free at a time. How you'd design a hinge to let them fold up when you lift but not when you put them under load, I don't know. Maybe use the foot as a restraining member so when you're squarely on them, they can't fold? But you'd still need to have control over the part you were trying to break free. I'd hate to have to be walking around and controlling a set of marionettes' strings to the hinged parts of my splatchers at the same time . . .

I'd think that suction-relief valves would require presenting a concave surface to the mud, so there'd be an air pocket to break. Maybe there are just mud types where even splatchers won't work.
