If you really want to confuse matters (and few TARS can resist that opportunity) several people argue that the true "height" of a mountain should be measured from its base to its peak, ignoring the convention of sea level.

In that case, the volcano Mauna Loa (Hawaii) clocks in at some 56,000 ft (17,000 m), dwarfing Everest.

Of course, if you want to climb it all, most has to be accomplished under water.
