Owen's reply came on just as I went to look on Google - he and the others are broadly right. Plelty of self-drive hire firms in the non-tidal section (above Teddington Lock). All will be motor cruisers, perhaps some narrow boats.
Try Blakes.co.uk (who also do the Broads) and /or type Thames boat hire into Google
