I am an Englishman living in the Netherlands. I have read AR's books
since I began to read thirty odd years ago.I have always enjoyed them and
I hope to look forward to reading them to my children if that ever
happens! You must know that Holland has a large network rivers and
canals and to enjoy this I have the pleasure of owning a 1910 gaff-
rigged antique sailing boat, a boat I imagine Mr A.R. would approve of
(not one peice of plastic here!)I have completely restored it (still
need some new sails) and have named her 'Dear Prudence', I am sorry
for not naming her from something in AR's books but this is an old lady
of a boat and somehow G.A. or Aged Parent doesn't sound right so Dear
Prudence it is (Beatles-souixe and the banshees).
I never realised there was a society devoted to A.R. and his books with
people still in love with his stories that captivated me when I was
young. I used to dream of having a boat when I saw pudding faces in their
boats, now when I can get away I can have my own adventures sailing and
sleeping on prudence on the lakes over here in Holland. I know that we
are far away from the lakes but A.R. lives here in Holland too!.
We are mostly on Looesdrecht plass near Utrecht and in the summer you can
hire gaff sailing boats and be a pirate or explorer for yourself for a while.
