I remember seeing a film of Clare Francis in mid-Atlantic on one of the single-handed Observer Trans Atlantic races. She was in the middle of a series of storms and was exhausted and generally very depressed.
Its not surprising when you consider that these solo sailors go for weeks on minimal sleep and are under high stress most of the time. The occasional lapse into self-pity and depression would seem to be permissible.
