This winter I saw a sheet of ice on the open waters of Lake Ontario for the first time. I have seen it in sheltered harbour water but not the water outside the breakwaters.
On the other hand, Lake Huron and Georgian Bay often freeze for a long way offshore and occasionally right across. Shallower lakes such as Lake Erie and Lake Simcoe and those inland almost always freeze.
