It strikes me that the Ransome affair perfectly illustrates a point made by Collingwood to the effect if you could summon an historic figure, sit him in an armchair opposite you, and (somehow) get hbim to answer your questions truthfully, you still wouldn't arrive at "what really happened".
But I suppose delivering diamonds would make AR in some minimal way a Bolshevik "agent", i.e. someone who acted for and on behalf of the Bolsheviks.
