When I lived in the UK, I found that the best way to buy bacon (and sausages and ham) was by post from Jack Scaife a Yorkshire butcher specialising in dry curing of pork meats. I have included a link to the website. I can recommend their products.

As you can see from the site, they will post their products all around the world and it is done without refrigeration. Certainly there were no adverse effects in the trip from Yorkshire to London, even during a hot August. So there should have been little problem keepiong bacon in Peter Duck/Ben Gunn's cave for a week.

In any event, I had always imagined that the bacon was obtained from Dixon's or Swainson's farm along with milk/bread/bunloaf/eggs and so could be obtained by the Swallows as and when needed. How's that for convenience shopping!!!

Unfortunately, quarantine laws that Jack Scaife's products can't be sent to the following places: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Christmas Island, Cocos Islands, Cuba, Faroe Islands, Guam, Guyana, Iran, Japan, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Nigeria, Norfolk Island, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Spitzbergen, Sweden, USA, Wake Island. So I haven't been able to eat this stuff since returning to Sydney.

The other product that used to be sent unrefrigerated in the UK and did not seem to suffer was clotted cream. On order for this would turn upfrom Cornwall in the next morning's post, ready to put on warm scones. Very civilised.
