I had the same thought about getting the bacon from from Mary. After all, they trucked to her place for milk each morning, and she occasionally dropped in herself. I could very easily see one of the Swainson's giving the kids a slab of bacon to take with them.

As an alternative, as a teen when my friends and I would go off for a fishing weekend we'd store our perishables in the creek, which kept them plenty cold. The children could have placed bacon, eggs, butter, and the like in glass jars and stored them in the creek, where they would have kept nicely I think. A gunny sack would be no good, because the crawdads would be all over it, but glass jars would do nicely.

Of course, if they had done something like this, AR would have mentioned it I expect. So, it seems Mary is a more likely source for the bacon.
