Dick might have been able to work out that Fred hadn't got the valve settings right. That engine should have toyed with the van, instead of being stalled by it. And the exhaust sounded very odd.

The boathouse where the steam launch Shamrock - which Fred went out in - is kept is very close to the site of Beckfoot if the Lake Maps are superimposed on Windermere.

Shamrock must have been very like the Beckfoot launch in layout although (sadly) thae latter was quite clearly driven by an internal combustion engine which chug chugged. John would never have heard Shamrock approaching - you can hear a watch ticking louder than her engine!
