Marmite was originally imported into Australia and New Zealand from Britain by Sanitarium Health Foods, but they got the secret recipe and started making it at Cooranabong in 1944 according to their website. Their New Zealand factory at Papanui Christchurch now makes Marmite for the South Pacific.

The recent British Marmite ad with a large black blob rolling down the main street of Thames, New Zealand (which was rescheduled as it scared toddlers) was made in New Zealand. One of the ad makers said he preferred the New Zealand product to the British version, so the secret recipe must have been altered!

Sanitarium Health Foods who also make Peanut Butter, breakfast foods eg "Weetbix” and other health and vegetarian foods is run by the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Reputedly the New Zealand Government Charities Bill to regulate charities (and introduce more bureaucracy) is aimed at Sanitarium (to tax them as a business?).
