As to the 12 gauge being bigger than 13 gauge, I'll refer you to the AWG wire standards (which are used for some nails) as well as shotgun bores, where the smaller numbers are larger. Common household lamp cords, for instance, are 18 gauge (latterly 16 gauge, presumably for fear of lawsuits) while the house will be wired with 12 or 14 gauge wiring to support the 15 A circuits commonly in place) and a 12 ga. round is significantly larger than a 20 ga. (I used to use an old 20 ga. empty nested in a 12 ga. empty as a holder for strike-anywhere matches.).
