Sorry, you're right, girls took Home Ec and boys took shop. I don't know if anyone could have insisted on a cross-over. I do know that my mother managed to get into a school shop class in the late '30s, on the strength of her brother's work in it; she ended up suitably impressing the instructor with her walnut coffee table (which still graces my parents' den some 70 years on).
