I suppose that part of the frustration that I feel comes from the failure of all sorts of people (including educators, pupils, parents and employers) to come to grips with what they really want educational institutions to do.
To take employers - some of them seem to want schools (and universities, where relevant) to turn out graduates who can fit into their enterprises without the employer needing to do any training of his or her own. I have strong arguments with my professional partners who seem to want universities to turn out law graduates who are able to run complex commercial matters for clients without supervision and direction from those who have been doing the job for 20 or more years. What I ask of the universities is that they train their law students to understand the logic of the law (and, believe it or not, there is one), how to identify what law will be relevant to a set of facts and how to find which facts are legally relevant - I can take that and turn graduates wiwth those skills into good practitioners able to give useful and practical advice to real clients.
In a sense, everyone wants to try to convice the "schools" to take on the jobs that they don't want to or don't have time to do themselves.
