But there must be SOME word for the state of mind I mean.

AR wrote 'When there's a Man Overboard, always gybe.' 'Seamanship' examinations now tell you first to switch the engine on and lower sail. I could guarantee to pick the person up quicker under sail than I could start even my present, much more reliable, engine.

Barely a month goes by without the local lifeboat bringing in a yacht in distress with engine trouble. Nobody seems to ask the purpose of the pole sticking up amidships.

Perhaps the ultimate example of this non-AR frame of mind which I have noticed is students sailing dinghies at sailing schools wearing hard hats!
