I was reading an account of life in a Medieval Manor. I am not sure if this a true story or an early urban Christmas myth. At Christmas the servants got to put a big log on the fire, as long as the log burnt the servants had a holiday. The story I read was about how big a butt the servants could get into the fireplace and kitchen.
A nice incentive to get the largest piece of firewood.
