I don't envy the person who had to sweep the chimney after the burning of creosoted railway sleepers. The creosote product can form a hard shell in the chimney which has to be dislodged with a pointed bar. A sweep's brush won't touch it.
Very resinous pine has a similar effect.
In the 1930's some people swept their own chimneys and the soot was placed on the garden. I think if you burned wood exclusively then your chimney should be swept twice a year.
